Alaska Auto Insurance Coverage

Being home to countless glaciers and snowy mountain tops, operating a vehicle in Alaska’s rugged climate is slightly different than in the lower 48. But before you begin coasting down Seward Highway, you’ll need to ensure you have the right protection for yourself and your vehicle.

Required Auto Insurance in Alaska

Alaska requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Alaska requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $25,000 per accident.

Alaska Teen Driving Laws

Alaska operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) Law, which includes three stages: Instruction Permit, Provisional License, and Unrestricted Driver's License.

  • Instruction Permit: At 14, Alaskan teens can obtain an instruction permit after passing a written exam and a vision test. An instruction permit allows teens to drive with a licensed driver over 21.
  • Provisional License: At 16, teen drivers can apply for a provisional license after holding an instruction permit for 6 months. The provisional license also requires teen drivers to complete at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training, with 10 hours dedicated to driving in challenging circumstances such as harsh weather or at night. With a provisional license, teen drivers cannot drive between the hours of 1:00 and 5:00 AM and may not carry passengers under the age of 21, except siblings.
  • Unrestricted Driver's License: Once 18, drivers may apply immediately for a full license.
